The KwaZulu Natal Civil Society Organisations Coalition (KZNCSOC) hosted its first annual women's day event to honour and celebrate women on their month. This took place at the Diakonia Centre on August 12, during a month dedicated to women in South Africa.
Executive committee member of the coalition and presiding officer on the day, Evashnee Naidu said: “We celebrate women as: leaders, mothers, nurturers, innovators and trend setters! It’s all about celebrating your roles and giving you an opportunity to sit back, relax and indulge your senses in acknowledging all your daily achievements with your peers.”
The day lived up to its title “Celebrating You” as the women were pampered with a spa and massages at low rates, free diabetes and blood pressure tests from Sparkport, various crafts were sold by women vendors and they were equipped with free financial advice from Old Mutual.
The aim of the event was to empower, educate and encourage women to support each other, not only in August but all the time. The spa, massages and crafts sold were to buy from and support fellow sisters that are doing it for themselves said Naidu.
Activists Kanyisa Booi and Jenny Boyce Hlongwa were guest speakers for the day and shared inspirational stories that encouraged women to keep up the great work they do. Booi said women were not to be comfortable where they are when things are going wrong. She said: “We have to constantly disrupt. We have got to disrupt positively to make sure the world becomes a better place.”
Boyce-Hlongwa said women must celebrate everything about themselves including their success and failures because nobody else will. She added: “Power is not something that is given. You have to take it. Men will not give us the power.”
