The Democracy Development Programme (DDP) in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), hosted a two- day conference on Ethical Leadership in the Public Sector in South Africa.
The meeting took place at the Tsogo Sun Elangeni Hotel from 20-21 November. Individuals form various research institutions; government agencies citizen interest groups and civil society organizations attended the event.
The event included talks from UKZN Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Deresh Ramjugernath, Executive Director of DDP, Paul Kariuki and Special Adviser to the premier of KZN, Nhlanhla Ngidi delivered the keynote address on day one of the conference.
In his speech, Ngidi spoke about the importance of ethical leadership for good governance.
“The subject of ethical leadership in my view is critically important, especially given the developments in our country as well as the disclosures that have been happening at the State Capture Commission. It shows that ethics, as a compass of our behavior is critically important to guide our behavior in whatever venture we find ourselves in. Ethics are the only assurance, in my view, that a country or any institution does not degenerate to anarchy,” he said.
He further added that the conference was of importance in as it served as a reminder of ethical responsibilities.
“While this conference is discussed ethics of our acceptable behavior as well as assisting with develop within us a consciousness where we are able to do the right thing instinctively. It is also a conference that serves as a stark reminder of the fact that as South Africans, in all walks of life, we need to continuously hold ourselves accountable and actually give account about or actions and if that were not our lifestyle, particularly in leadership, it would be a disaster,” said Ngidi.
The aim of the conference was to address the decadence in ethical leadership in the public sector and to try find and explore solutions to address the maladministration and corruption in the public sector.
