The Community radio platform was identified as one of the key and very strategic conduit for reaching ordinary citizens of the country, due to their nature and character of being community oriented. The DDP has over the years developed very intimate and mutually beneficial partnership with community radio stations. The partnership has grown immensely over the years and our intervention has greatly contributed towards elevating the status of community radio stations as platforms for critical engagement.
The lockdown, across the world, has created greater interest in pursuing alternative methods for teaching and learning, connecting and keep abreast with current affairs. The extent of this interest also comes in at an opportune moment as South African authorities (namely the Competition Commission and ICASA) have made headway in discussions with communications providers to consider lowering the cost of data, to make it more accessible and competitive.
The Democracy Development Program recognizes that post the official lockdown, social distancing will still likely need to be considered, and this will ultimately impact our ability to convene large spaces for the purposes of civic engagement and education.
Thus, engagement about these issues will need alternative spaces. Not only will these be provided by the community radio conversations, but the recording of these conversations, to be added onto our online platforms for further distribution will create the appropriate impetus for citizens to know more, and engage more about their rights and civic duties.
The sole purpose of this project is to design and implement DDP Radio Talk show series towards enhancing citizens political education through our website and social media platforms.
