Delegates at the DDP workshop hosted at Elangeni in Durban.

DDP hosted the Participatory Municipal Budgeting workshop at Elangeni Hotel on 5-6 April 2022. This workshop looked at the Local government municipal systems act 32 of 2000 which suggests that a rigorous local participatory framework ought to be utilized to obtain public participation from the community and structures at the local government level.

The intended outcome of the workshop was to:

  • Unpack the role of political parties in encouraging participatory budgeting
  • Unpack the impact of the absence of participation
  • Analyzing available data
  • Unpack the potential tools for mobilization
  • Unpack the impact of service delivery protests on municipal budgeting

This workshop was facilitated by Khanya Vilakazi from the University of Mpumalanga and Dr. Isaac Khambule, from the University of KwaZulu Natal.
