DDP Senior Programs Officer, Sphamandla Mhlongo attended a month-long project in the United States of America earlier this year.

This project explored how enhancing the leadership skills, knowledge, and expectations of the next generation of politicians can advance civic engagement. The project engaged young leaders in fostering self-confidence and visions for change while exploring ways to provide tools and professional networks needed to launch or further political careers. Participants interacted with public, private, academic, religious, and grassroots organizations to learn about best practices in responsible citizen activism and leadership, as well as educational and social strategies to prepare youth for positive civic engagement. The project included volunteer activities, professional networking, and opportunities for participants to share empowerment strategies they use in their home countries.

Objectives:

  • Examine leadership strategies and communication skills used to manage political and social challenges while balancing divergent social demands and interests;
  • Explore advocacy strategies that facilitate social empowerment and justice; Discuss how public-private partnerships foster political and civic engagement;
  • Examine the election center and voting precinct preparation, election monitoring, vote tabulation, and security procedures; and Review political, social, and economic policy
