Local government is the sphere of government closest to the people. Many basic services are delivered by local municipalities and local ward councilors are the politicians closest to communities. Organizations that play an activist and/or developmental role should understand how local government works and how to influence it.

The Democracy Development Program hosted a series of workshops targeting organizations working closely with local government and members of the LGLAN. This workshop series focused on the following topics:

Understanding Local Government Mandate: 22 March 2023

  • To Increase the organization’s understanding of local government
  • Help organizations map points of intervention at the local government level
  • Help organizations understand key issues that they have the ability to tackle at the local government level

Understanding Public Participation: 23 March 2023

  • Increase organization’s understanding of local government
  • Help organizations understand mechanisms available for public participation
  • Help organizations understand key issues that they have the ability to tackle at the local government level
