Mabaso’s Journey with the Democracy Development Program
In the heart of Marianhill, a young man named Bhekizenzo Mabaso has become a beacon of hope and change.
His journey began as a Peer Educator for Africa Unite, where he first discovered his passion for community engagement and education. However, it was his collaboration with the Democracy Development Program (DDP) that truly transformed his path.
From 2018 to 2021, Bhekizenzo worked closely with DDP as an Associate Facilitator. During this time, he received extensive training in the DDP methodology, particularly mastering “The Art of Conversation.” This training equipped him with the skills to mobilize citizens and youth in his community, facilitating crucial dialogues on Civic and Voter Education, as well as Local Governance.
Bhekizenzo’s impact extended beyond these dialogues. He became an integral part of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk at his local police station, where he worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between the youth and law enforcement. His dedication to fostering understanding and cooperation was evident in every initiative he undertook.
One of the most significant milestones in Bhekizenzo’s journey was the establishment of the Institute for Mental Liberation, a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) he registered for his community. This organization focuses on educating youth, women, and citizens about the importance of political participation. Through the Institute, Bhekizenzo has empowered countless individuals to take an active role in their communities and the democratic process.
Bhekizenzo’s commitment to democracy and civic engagement did not stop there. As a seasoned DDP election observer, he played a pivotal role in ensuring fair and transparent elections. For the 2024 elections, he took his efforts a step further by recruiting and training ten other young people from his community to join the DDP observer mission. This initiative not only strengthened the integrity of the electoral process but also inspired a new generation of civic-minded individuals.
Bhekizenzo Mabaso’s story is a testament to the power of education, dialogue, and community engagement. Through his work with the Democracy Development Program, he has not only transformed his own life but also made a lasting impact on the lives of those around him. His journey continues to inspire and remind us all of the importance of active.
