Amplifying Youth Voices: DDP Political Summit at the University of Zululand
On May 15, 2025, thought leaders, educators, and activists convened at the University of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal for a landmark Political Summit focused on The Role of Tertiary Institutions in Increasing Youth Political Participation. Hosted by the Democracy Development Program (DDP) in collaboration with the Centre for Community Development, the summit served as a vital platform for exploring innovative strategies to enhance political engagement among young South Africans.
Facilitated by Thabile Mdhluli, DDP Associate Facilitator, the event brought together students, academics, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss how higher education institutions can cultivate informed and active citizens. With youth voter turnout remaining a significant challenge, the summit aimed to spark conversations on equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities necessary for meaningful participation in democratic processes.
Throughout the day, speakers shared valuable insights on the importance of civic education, leadership development, and accessible political dialogue within academic environments. Participants engaged in dynamic discussions, examining the influence of social media, advocacy initiatives, and student-led movements on political consciousness.
The summit reinforced the notion that tertiary institutions are crucial incubators for critical thinking and democratic engagement. Attendees emphasized the necessity for universities to integrate civic engagement programs into their curricula and foster environments that encourage open political discourse.
As the nation gears up for future elections, events like this are essential for ensuring that young voices are heard, valued, and mobilized. By leveraging the power of education, South Africa can inspire a new generation of politically active citizens dedicated to building a more inclusive democracy.
