Local Government Dialogue- Lamontville, eThekwini Municipality

On April 9, 2025, the Democracy Development Program (DDP) hosted a Local Government dialogue at Lamontville, Ethekwini Municipality. The dialogue was facilitated by DDP Associate Facilitator Sphelele Memela. This event aimed to foster understanding and collaboration between local government and community-based organizations.

Local government is the sphere of government closest to the people, responsible for delivering many basic services. Local ward councillors are the politicians most directly connected to communities. It is crucial for organizations that play an activist and/or developmental role to understand how local government operates and how to effectively influence it.

The South African government has established clear policies mandating that local municipalities and councillors be sensitive to community views and responsive to local problems. Building partnerships between civil society and local government is essential to address local issues effectively. Several laws outline the participation processes that municipalities must use to consult the community.

The dialogue aimed to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Understanding Local Government: Enhancing knowledge about the structure and functions of local government.
  • Role of Municipal Council: Clarifying the responsibilities and impact of municipal councils.
  • Importance of Lobbying and Advocacy: Highlighting the significance of lobbying and advocacy in influencing local government decisions.
  • Role of Youth in Local Government: Emphasizing the importance of youth participation in local governance.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including community-based organizations, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), War Room Secretary, Department of Social Development, and the office of the Ward Councillor. This mix of stakeholders ensured a comprehensive discussion on the various aspects of local government and community engagement.

The Local Government dialogue hosted by DDP was a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between local government and civil society. By fostering understanding and collaboration, the event aimed to empower communities to actively participate in local governance and advocate for their needs effectively.
