DDP Hosts Three‑Day Candidate Development Workshop in Durban Ahead of 2026 Local Government Elections
The Democracy Development Programme (DDP) successfully hosted a three‑day Candidate Development Workshop Series from 28 to 30 April 2026 at The Edward Hotel in Durban.
The workshop formed part of DDP’s #LGE2026 initiative and was facilitated by Sphamandla Mhlongo, DDP Senior Programmes Officer. It was designed to strengthen the capacity, preparedness, and ethical grounding of individuals seeking public office in the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections.
Bringing together aspiring councillors and community leaders, the programme responded to growing concerns about governance readiness, coalition politics, and declining public trust at the local government level. Over the three days, participants engaged in in‑depth discussions and practical sessions covering municipal governance, democratic accountability, ward‑level campaigning, coalition governance, and the institutional realities of serving in council.
The workshop featured contributions from a distinguished group of speakers and facilitators, including Dr Lubna Nadvi, Ndwa Tshishonga, and Noluthando Phungula from the University of KwaZulu‑Natal, as well as Eric Apelgren of Mkhongi Circle. Their insights enriched discussions and encouraged participants to reflect critically on leadership, ethics, and their role in advancing responsive local governance.
DDP extends its sincere appreciation to all speakers for their invaluable contributions, as well as to the participants whose active engagement and commitment contributed to the success of the workshop.
Through initiatives such as the Candidate Development Workshop Series, DDP continues to support the development of informed, capable, and accountable local leaders, contributing to the strengthening of democracy at the grassroots level.
