Inanda YCPD Women’s Seminar: Empowering Women to End GBV, Rape and Murder
Empowering Women: A United Front for Safety, Voice, and Change
On 21 August 2025, the Inanda Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD) in partnership with the Democracy Development program and other key stakeholders, hosted a powerful and transformative Women’s Seminar at the O.R. Tambo Community Center in Ward 57, under the theme:
“Strengthening Women’s Capacity for Advancing Socio-Economic Development – To End GBV, Rape and Murder in Inanda, Durban.”
The seminar brought together young women from diverse backgrounds, both in and out of school, aged between 14 and 35, to engage in critical dialogue and empowerment sessions aimed at addressing the socio-economic roots of gender-based violence and inequality.
The event was facilitated by Buhlebuyeza Motseme, a dedicated DDP Associate Facilitator, who guided the day’s discussions with insight and compassion. The highlight of the seminar was the keynote address delivered by Nokuthula Zibi Hlophe, Youth Manager at eThekwini Municipality – Office of the Mayor, and Chairperson of the South African Youth Council. Her speech inspired attendees with a call to action for young women to take up space in leadership, economic development, and community safety initiatives.
This seminar forms part of a broader initiative by Inanda YCPD, in collaboration with Inanda SAPS, civil society organizations, and government departments, to combat the alarming rates of gender-based violence in the area. Through workshops, school outreach, and community dialogues, the YCPD continues to champion justice, safety, and empowerment for women and youth in Inanda.
