Empowering the Future: Youth Indaba in Folweni Township

On 2 May 2025, the RCCI Church in C Section, Folweni Township, South Africa, became the vibrant setting for a transformative event—the Youth Indaba. Organized by the Democracy Development Program (DDP) in partnership with the Njabulo Khwela Education Foundation (N.K.E.F), this first-of-its-kind gathering brought together young people from Folweni and surrounding areas to address one of the most pressing issues in their communities: youth unemployment.

Themed “Strengthening Youth Development by Advancing Socio-Economic Development through Employment,” the Indaba served as a dynamic platform for engagement, learning, and collaboration. It united various stakeholders, including government departments, development agencies, and community organizations, to share insights, opportunities, and practical solutions aimed at empowering the youth.

The primary objective of the Youth Indaba was to create a space where young people could openly discuss the challenges they face—particularly those related to unemployment, inequality, and poverty. Through interactive sessions and strategic dialogue, the event encouraged participants to explore innovative approaches and actionable strategies to overcome these barriers and build sustainable livelihoods.

This initiative holds significant importance within the broader context of community development. Folweni Township, like many others across South Africa, grapples with socio-economic challenges that disproportionately affect its youth. By fostering a sense of agency and collective responsibility, the Indaba aimed to inspire young individuals to take charge of their futures and become active contributors to their communities.

As a pioneering event in the region, the Youth Indaba set a powerful precedent for future youth-focused initiatives. It underscored the critical role of inclusive development and the transformative potential of youth engagement. With continued support and collaboration, such efforts can pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous South Africa.
