UMgungundlovu District’s Youth Indabas Inspire a New Generation of Active Citizens
The UMgungundlovu District Municipality recently witnessed two impactful Youth Indaba conferences hosted in partnership with local municipalities, civil society organisations, and democratic governance stakeholders. Held at Sakhamuzi Hall in Msunduzi Municipality on 4 June 2026 and Mpophomeni Hall in uMngeni Municipality on 15 June 2026, the gatherings brought together more than 220 young people committed to shaping a better future for their communities through active citizenship, leadership, and democratic participation.
Organised through the Democracy Development Program (DDP) and supported by municipal partners, the Youth Indabas served as powerful platforms for dialogue, reflection, civic education, and youth empowerment. The conferences were held under themes focusing on democracy, electoral participation, and the enduring legacy of the 1976 Youth Uprising, highlighting the critical role young people continue to play in advancing social justice and democratic governance.
Reflecting on History, Inspiring Future Action
The Msunduzi Youth Indaba centred on the theme “Reflecting on the 50 Years Legacy of the 1976 Youth Uprising: Shaping the Struggle of Today’s Generation through Electoral Participation.” Participants reflected on the bravery, unity, activism, and leadership demonstrated by the youth of 1976, while exploring how those values can address contemporary challenges facing young people today.
In uMngeni Municipality, the rallying call was “Your Vote, Your Future, Make It Count!” The focus was on strengthening civic education, promoting voter registration and participation, and creating meaningful engagement between young people, government institutions, and civil society organisations.
Together, the two events reinforced a common message: democracy thrives when young people are informed, engaged, and empowered to participate actively in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
Strong Youth Participation Across Municipalities
The conferences attracted significant participation from diverse groups of young people, including unemployed graduates, youth organisations, community leaders, municipal representatives, and civil society stakeholders. Msunduzi Municipality recorded an impressive turnout of 129 participants, exceeding its initial target, while 97 delegates attended the uMngeni Youth Indaba.
The strong attendance reflected the growing appetite among young people for platforms where their voices can be heard and where they can engage constructively on issues affecting their communities. Participants represented different backgrounds, age groups, and wards, creating a rich environment for meaningful conversation and collaboration.
Tackling the Challenges Facing Young People
Throughout both Indabas, participants openly discussed key social, economic, and political challenges facing youth, including unemployment, crime, substance abuse, inequality, mental health, lack of opportunities, and limited representation in governance structures.
Through facilitated dialogues, group discussions, and plenary sessions, young people examined how communities can work together to address these challenges. They emphasised the importance of skills development, entrepreneurship, youth-led organisations, and stronger engagement with local government structures.
A recurring sentiment across both municipalities was the need for young people to move beyond being observers and become active participants in community development. Delegates highlighted that meaningful change requires involvement in local governance processes, voting, ward committees, civic organisations, and public policy discussions.
Promoting Democratic Participation and Accountability
One of the most significant outcomes of the Youth Indabas was the renewed focus on democratic participation. Electoral education sessions facilitated with the support of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) provided valuable information on voter registration, electoral processes, and the importance of exercising democratic rights.
Participants gained a deeper understanding of how local government decisions directly affect their daily lives and why their participation in elections matters. Many pledged to become more involved in civic activities and to encourage their peers to register and vote.
Equally important was the emphasis on accountability. Young people used the platforms to engage directly with leaders and stakeholders, raising concerns about service delivery, representation, and opportunities for youth involvement in municipal decision-making.
Youth-Driven Solutions for Community Development
The discussions generated valuable recommendations aimed at strengthening youth development throughout the UMgungundlovu District. Participants called for greater youth and women representation in decision-making spaces, stronger youth forums and organisations, enhanced support for entrepreneurship initiatives, and improved collaboration between municipalities, government departments, and civil society organisations.
Young people also emphasised the importance of creating sustainable structures that allow youth voices to influence community development beyond one-off engagements. The desire for ongoing dialogue and continuous partnerships emerged as a clear priority from both conferences
Building the Next Generation of Leaders
The success of the Msunduzi and uMngeni Youth Indabas demonstrates that young people remain eager to contribute to the development of their communities when provided with meaningful opportunities to engage. The events not only strengthened civic knowledge but also inspired a renewed sense of leadership, responsibility, and collective action among participants.
As South Africa commemorates fifty years since the historic 1976 Youth Uprising, these conferences served as a reminder that the spirit of youth activism remains alive. Today's young people continue to face complex challenges, but they are equally determined to be part of the solutions. By investing in civic education, democratic participation, and youth empowerment, the UMgungundlovu District is helping to cultivate a generation of informed, engaged, and resilient young leaders ready to shape the future of their municipalities and the country as a whole.
