DDP Launches Inception Workshop to Strengthen Civic Education and Social Crime Prevention in eThekwini
The Democracy Development Program (DDP) successfully hosted its inception workshop for the Social Justice Initiative (SJI)–funded project titled “Strengthening Civic Education to Enhance Social Crime Prevention in eThekwini Metro.” The workshop took place on 18 February 2026 at the DDP Offices and marked the official start of this vital initiative aimed at empowering communities, particularly young people, to actively contribute to safer and more socially cohesive environments.
Facilitated by Mbalenhle Mkhize, the session convened 35 key DDP stakeholders and partners, representing a diverse network of civil society organisations, community leaders, and youth-focused structures from across eThekwini. Their participation highlights a strong collective commitment to addressing the root causes of social crime and promoting civic responsibility.
Driving Social Crime Prevention Through Active Citizenship
The project’s core objective is to place civic education at the centre of community‑based crime prevention strategies. By equipping young people and civil society groups with the knowledge, skills, and platforms necessary for meaningful participation, the initiative seeks to transform passive community members into proactive agents of change.
The project aims to:
- Mobilise and activate youth and civil society to participate directly in social crime prevention efforts.
- Strengthen civic education practices that enhance awareness, accountability, and social responsibility.
- Increase public participation among young people, ensuring they play a sustainable role in shaping safer communities.
During the workshop, participants engaged in discussions around the social drivers of crime, the gaps in current civic education practices, and the role of collective action in influencing safer communities. Stakeholders also explored opportunities for collaboration, co‑creation of interventions, and continuous community engagement throughout the project’s implementation.
The enthusiasm and insights shared in the room demonstrated the readiness of partners to support a more engaged youth population and uplift civic consciousness across the metro.
Looking Ahead
As the project unfolds, DDP will roll out a series of activities—including training sessions, dialogues, youth mobilisation campaigns, and community‑based civic education platforms. Through this initiative, DDP aims to strengthen the social fabric of eThekwini by empowering communities to take an active role in preventing crime and fostering social justice.
The successful inception workshop sets a strong foundation for impactful work ahead and reaffirms DDP’s commitment to supporting active citizenship, social accountability, and safer communities for all.
