From Relaying to Revealing: Empowering Journalists for Data-Driven Election Reporting
As South Africa prepares for the 2026 local government elections, community journalists remain at the forefront of informing citizens and strengthening democracy at the grassroots level. To support this critical role, the "From Relaying to Revealing – Moving Beyond the Press Release to Data-Driven Truth" workshop equipped community media practitioners across KwaZulu-Natal with the practical skills needed to move beyond simply reporting official statements and towards producing impactful, evidence-based journalism.
Facilitated by media and communications specialist Gugu Madonsela, the interactive workshop focused on building the capacity of local reporters to conduct data-driven investigations, analyse public documents, and monitor accountability within their municipalities. Participants were introduced to practical techniques that enable them to uncover the stories behind council decisions, service delivery challenges, and political developments that directly affect local communities.
A key component of the training was demystifying the complexities of South Africa's three-ballot local electoral system, understanding the implications of Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) ward boundary changes, and examining the potential municipal-level impact of the evolving political landscape shaped by the Government of National Unity (GNU) in KwaZulu-Natal. By simplifying these often-complex electoral processes, the workshop strengthened journalists' ability to provide clear, accurate, and accessible information to voters.
Recognising the growing threat of election-related misinformation and disinformation, the programme also introduced a rigorous five-step mobile fact-checking protocol. Participants learned practical methods for identifying and verifying misleading content, including deepfake videos, manipulated images, and viral isiZulu WhatsApp voice notes. The training emphasised responsible reporting practices that help prevent the spread of false information and protect communities from unnecessary panic during sensitive election periods.
The workshop forms part of a broader effort to strengthen democratic participation by supporting community media as trusted sources of information. With voter apathy remaining a concern in many municipalities, local journalists play a vital role in helping citizens understand how municipal decisions affect their daily lives from water provision and infrastructure maintenance to budget priorities and local governance.
The intended impact extends beyond the workshop itself. Participating journalists are expected to implement structured fact-checking systems within their newsrooms, establish “30-Day Story Maps” to monitor coalition developments, council meetings, PAIA requests, and post-election budget decisions, and adopt a more investigative approach to reporting. These practices will contribute to stronger accountability journalism and more informed communities.
Ultimately, "From Relaying to Revealing" is about transforming community journalists from passive relayers of information into active watchdogs of local democracy. Through the expert facilitation of Gugu Madonsela and a strong focus on investigative reporting, electoral literacy, and fact-checking, the workshop empowers reporters to deliver accurate, trustworthy, and impactful journalism that strengthens democratic integrity and encourages meaningful civic participation across KwaZulu-Natal.
