Amplifying Citizen Voices: The SheLeads Journey
The Democracy Development Program (DDP), in partnership with Huntswood, recently hosted a transformative series of workshops under the SHE LEADS program. These initiatives have become a beacon of hope for women in our workplace, fostering empowerment and change. Over five dynamic modules, women from our call center united to delve into essential topics such as leadership, legal literacy, emotional intelligence, cultural identity, and workplace rights. These workshops not only imparted knowledge but ignited a movement of sisterhood, resilience, and advocacy.
“Leadership is not about perfection; it is about courage, empathy, and the power to heal while uplifting others.” This sentiment resonated throughout the sessions as participants learned to embrace their roles as leaders.
The journey began with the first module, which focused on leadership styles, emotional intelligence, and trauma-informed empowerment, emphasizing that self-care is the bedrock of effective leadership. The second module addressed family law, gender-based violence, and legal literacy, equipping participants with vital tools to advocate for their rights and protect their families.
In the third module, the focus shifted to the workplace, covering employment contracts, unfair labor practices, and CCMA procedures. Many participants found these insights demystifying the law, making it accessible and relevant. The fourth module deepened understanding of South Africa’s justice system, introducing restorative justice as a leadership tool grounded in Ubuntu. Highlights included a guest lecture by Dr. Janine Hicks from UKZN on gender justice and leadership, mock mediation exercises, and Ubuntu healing circles. Participants reflected on personal empowerment projects, discovering that justice is not merely legal; it is emotional, relational, and transformative.
The final module integrated lessons from all previous sessions, grounding leadership in identity, culture, and community. Activities like storytelling circles, the creation of a She Leads Referral Resource Pack, and sustainability planning paved the way for lasting impact. Participants recognized that empowerment becomes a legacy when shared, sustained, and rooted in community. A powerful theme of collective empowerment emerged, with women forming peer networks, sharing personal stories, and committing to uplift each other. One participant remarked, “I came here as an employee. I’m leaving as a leader, not because I have power, but because I’ve found my voice.”
To celebrate this incredible journey, a graduation ceremony will be held after the completion of all five modules, honoring the courage, growth, and leadership of every participant. This event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in advocacy and empowerment. Looking ahead, plans include establishing She Leads Mediation Corners in workplaces, Legal & Restorative Offices for accessible support, accredited ADR training for alumni, and the publication of a She Leads Anthology featuring transformative stories.
The SHE LEADS journey exemplifies that when women are provided with knowledge, safe spaces, and support, they rise, not only for themselves but for their families, workplaces, and communities. “When women understand justice, they do not only seek it, they build it.” Together, we will continue to cultivate a workplace where leadership is inclusive, healing is embraced, and every woman is empowered to lead with confidence.
