Journalism Workshop

Under the theme “Reporting and Facilitating Public Education on Inclusive Governance, Journalism Workshop targeting community media reporters was hosted. The workshop aimed at providing a better understanding of how inclusive governance should be reported and the role of the media in facilitating effective public education on this topic.

Apart from the targeted radio journalists, talk shows, and Current Affairs Hosts and Producers, the workshop also attracted mainstream print and online media. Robust discussions were conducted after the intensive practical tasks that resulted in a changed mindset of the media personnel attended.

The Workshop was conducted under the below objectives:

• To create a platform for connection through activities
• To bring together two communities and political leadership to facilitate inclusive governance.
• To promote the rights of the Migrants (refugees and asylum seekers)
• To raise awareness about human rights violations
• To shape the opportunities, attitudes, and behavior of individuals and families.

Insights from the Workshop

• A huge skills gap in the acceptable terms to be used when reporting on migration issues was such as identified.
• Lack of knowledge of where legal framework on a national and international level on the rights of the migrants, and the role of non-state actors in promoting inclusive governance.
• Journalists appreciated the knowledge and tools gained that will enable them to report inclusively, factually, and responsibly.
• The workshop served as an eye-opener on how media is often perpetuating discrimination and violence against minority groups when reporting.
• Lack of vernacular vocabulary was identified as a challenging factor for the journalists when reporting.
