EmpowerHER: Tripartite Women’s caucus summit, Durban South Africa
The Democracy Development Program (DDP) in partnership with the KwaZulu Natal Legislature hosted a groundbreaking Tripartite Women’s caucus Summit, comprising of women’s causes from Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa. The summit was a culmination of shared commitments to advancing women’s rights, to empower more women who are and aspire to occupy political office in the region. It is further committed to create a steadfast platform for regional collaboration, and to foster joint actions as a means of overcoming shared challenges to promote gender equality across borders.
DDP Political Summit 2024
The Democracy Development Program hosted a political summit themed 30 years of South Africa’s Democracy: Making sense of the 2024 Electoral Outcomes. This event was a sequel of the two Multiparty forums that the organisation held before elections. Most importantly the summit sought to retrospect and critically analyse post elections state of affairs. DDP’s senior program’s officer- Mr Sphamandla Brian Mhlongoo was a program director for the session.
DDP | Inanda FM Media Summit 2024
The Democracy Development Program NPC in partnership with Inanda fm hosted a media summit on the 27th of June 2024 in Durban. This summit is one DDP’s annual special project hosted as a means of equipping and reflecting media practitioners in the country. The program was steered by DDP’s senior programs manager – Mr Sphamandla Mhlongo.
Unpacking political party manifestos for the 2024 elections: Healthcare, safety and security
The Democracy Development Program NPC convened a sequel of the Multiparty forum where political parties engaged with the public and expressed their manifestos and visions for South Africa. The DDP senior program officer Siphamandla Mhlongo facilitated the program. He foregrounded the session by clarifying the importance of these sessions and how crucial are they for South Africa’s democracy. Moreover, he asserted that it’s part of the organization’s mandate to establish platforms for citizens to publicly share their views, critic and question the current regime and political parties about their promises.
DDP Public forum: Unpacking the role of ward committees in fostering meaningful public participation.
The Democracy Development Program (DDP), in collaboration with the Msunduzi Municipality, hosted a Public Forum at the prestigious Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Friday, April 5, 2024; this event was an enlightening discussion on the crucial role of ward committees in enhancing public participation.

DDP Multi-party Forum
The Democracy Development Program NPC convened a thought-provoking multi-political party forum where political parties engaged with the public and expressed their manifestos and visions for South Africa. Our partner, the Centre for the Advancement of Non-racialism and Democracy, was represented by Professor Bheki Mngomezulu, who gave an insightful analysis that encourages continued interactions between citizens and political parties that claim to represent them.
Empowering Women: Building Gender-Sensitive Communities for Strong Leadership – uBuhlebezwe Local Municipality
The Democracy Development Program, in collaboration with the uBuhlebezwe Local Municipality, recently organized a pivotal dialogue to empower women in the uBuhlebezwe community. Held on February 26, 2024, under the guiding theme of ‘Building Gender-Sensitive Communities to Develop Strong and Capable Leadership,’ the event marked a significant step towards fostering sustainable development practices and promoting gender equality.
SONA FORUM 2024
On 7 February, the Democracy Development Programme hosted its first forum of the year ahead of the 2024 SONA Forum, which is set to take place on 8 February. The theme for the forum was Unpacking the Budget Speech of 2023 and its implications on SONA.

Civic Education Conference 2023:
On 22 August 2023, DDP hosted its annual Civic Education Conference under the theme “Democratising information: Centering Citizen Voices.” This conference comes at a time where globally young people have been labelled as apathetic and uninterested in formal democratic processes. This is due to the consistently decreasing levels of youth voter turnout in elections. While South Africa has witnessed a similar trend of lower voter registration and turnout, South African youth are far from apathetic. Rather, South African youth are highly critical of political leaders and parties who they feel have ignored their needs and fail to engage with them in a meaningful manner.
DDP’s Annual Women’s Conference
On 8 August 2023, DDP hosted its annual Women’s Conference in celebration of South Africa’s Women’s Month. The Conference this year was led by the theme: The politics of gender representation in the democratic society – exploring proactive strategies for enhancing gender representation in the legislature.

On 13 June 2023, Afrobarometer in partnership with the Democracy Development Program hosted its partner briefing on South Africa’s survey. The survey focused on elections, climate change and state of democracy in South Africa.

Youth formations and Student formations have always been at the center of youth participation in the South African struggle both in Apartheid and Democratic governments.
The role of labour movements in consolidating democracy and development
There is a huge amount of work that lies ahead for labour, considering the economic and political crisis that South Africa is in presently, and cooperation among the various unions is absolutely vital. This was agreed upon by all the speakers who took part in a webinar titled: “The role of labour movements in consolidating democracy and development”, sponsored by the Democracy Development Program and hosted by the Mail & Guardian. Issues that it intended to address included the decrease in membership in organisations like COSATU and whether our unions can help build a culture of human rights.

DDP | Inanda FM 2nd Annual Media Summit
On 18 May 2023, Democracy Development Program hosted its 2nd Annual Media Summit with the theme The Role of Media at Times of Political Uncertainty. The Summit had a powerful lineup of speakers in the media industry. The speakers included Prof Anton Harber, Executive Director of Freexpression Campaign; Lukhona Mnguni, eNCA Talk Show Host; Nickolaus Bauer, DG Trust Campaign Manager and Ayesha Kajee, Practitioner and Activist at Africa Check. A special guest of honour, Gregor Jaecke from DDP’s partner, Konrad Adeneur Stiftung was also present offering his message of support.
Unpacking Democracy Public Forum – 20 April
On 20 April 2023, DDP hosted the Unpacking Democracy in South Africa public forum. The event was convened to provide space for those in the civic, government, and market space to talk about the status of democracy in South Africa today.
African Peer Review Mechanism Webinar
The African Policy Circle (APC) brought together think tanks and research organizations working on African issues – including governance, development, and democracy, from across Africa on Friday 17 March 2023 from 12:00-13:30 SAT, in a webinar celebrating the APRM’s 20th anniversary. Entitled: APRM@20 – Progress and Prospects. The webinar reflected on the last two decades, and project what the future holds for governance in Africa and the APRM.
Unpacking the 2023 Budget
On 7 March 2023, the Democracy Development Program held a Public Forum that focused on unpacking the 2023 National Budget. The event comes just shy of two weeks after South African Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, presented the National Budget.
Women Dialogue: Mpendle Local Municipality
In partnership with Impendle Local Municipality, DDP co-hosted a dialogue with women in the community of KwaNxamalala. The theme of this activity was ‘women as agents of change, advancing gender representation through community engagement’. Through the different presentations and discussions, we were able to engage with women on aspects around democracy, leadership, and equality as well as how these structures work best for them.
